Being Expendable

Dear Diary,

I’m sorry I haven’t written for so long. I have been very busy and my life is filled with many entertaining things — far better things than sitting at home and journaling. Ok, well perhaps that’s not completely true. Diary, I love you. Thanks for always being here for me.

It’s been about 14 months now, since I left my job at Urban Outfitters. I was there for five years and I had worked my way up to a position I truly loved; but for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out how to balance work, travel, friendships, marriage, faith, personal time, running a household — people do it, real-life Wonder Women & Men, but I couldn’t. So I took a sabbatical, diary, to figure out what I wanted out of life.

I did some of things I had planned to do, like start this blog, travel to India, open an Etsy shop, and spend more time building friendships and just being a housewife. A few opportunities I hadn’t foreseen came up and I was able to do them simply because I had the time; it’s a great gift to be able to say ‘yes’ to just about anything because you have no other obligations. I found though, that it can be just as hard cutting yourself off from something cold-turkey, and I don’t really handle the non-scheduled, sleeping-in, and doing whatever-the-hell I want kind of life as well as I’d liked to have either. I guess Wonder Woman just isn’t in my cards — but I’m ok with that, really.

So big news, diary — I got a job last week! I’m really excited to start working part-time at Anthropologie; I kind of feel like I’m back in the family. I still have some housewifing and traveling to do and I just don’t want to get busy busy again, so I think this is going to be perfect for me — and no, it’s not weird working part-time, it’s lovely. I’m really looking forward to making more lady friends too; lady friends = craft nights!!

That’s what’s been going on, diary… well that and a whole lot of pinning. Can you believe I have over 1000 followers on Pinterest, diary??!! Over. A. Grand!! It’s like the one thing I’m doing that people are paying a lot of attention to. What the heck? Here are some of my faves as of late:

Perfect. Little. Face.

Hello, Monday

We had an absolutely glorious weekend in Vancouver; clear, sunshiney, and warm. Hello, Monday; I see you brought the gloom back; how very kind of you. Rainy days – and of course we have them often – just make me want to sit up in bed and Pin. It’s a pretty easy thing to do for the unscheduled people, like myself. My hubs got up at 5:15 and I realized that when he did, I was wide awake, too. So I’ve gotten all caught up on blogs and Pinterest and now I’m about to garner up some energy for completing real projects that I’ve been meaning to check off my to-do list for a while. Before I head to it, I wanted to share a few pins that I keep coming back to.

Because I Love You

20120311-225620.jpg

I’m so excited — today I hit 400 followers on Pinterest! To celebrate, I want to offer all pinners a discount code for my Etsy shop. You need to do 2 things:

  • Go to my Etsy shop, The Cloven Heart, and pin your favorite item.
  • Then come back here and provide a link to your pin and I’d love for you to tell me which of my Pinterest boards are your favorite and why.

  • That’s all you need to do and I’ll email you a special code for 15% off any item in the shop! The coupon won’t expire, but this offer will; so get after it!

If you’re not pinning yet, what’s the hold up? I chose to start pinning instead of tumbling simply because my interests are so varied; I’d have to have a few different tumblrs to keep my stories straight and I just don’t have the stamina for something like that. Other people do that very well, but it seems overwhelming for me. So Pinterest helps me keep everything organized and in one place. It’s a game changer, people.

    Bedroom Stories

We moved into our hundred-year-old town home last April. It was not an instant love affair; I felt more like I was living out the movie Money Pit. #showingmyage It still needs a lot of work, but has great bones and three (3!) fireplaces, so it was kind of hard to say no to.

Whenever we move someplace new, the bedroom is always the last place to get “finished” — as in we set up the bed and closet and all the decorating comes last. Actually, the last place that we were in never got done and we were there for three years. So you can see where I’m going with this, right? Bedroom decor! Okay, so I’m only going to show you half of the bedroom because it really is not finished finished, but the half that is, I’m in love with. The half that is not done is my craft desk and hubbs’ workspace (cardinal no-no of the bedroom, I know).

Actually, I can always improve upon the done half, too. Currently we’re using milk crates as a nightstand solution. It was temporary, but they’ve grown on me; I think it’s nice and ironic next to the ornate headboard that we Craigslisted. In a perfect world, they would just be tree stumps anyway. I’m pretty non-traditional.

Above the bed is a collection of lovey-dovey art, wedding photos and our actual wedding attire. I much prefer seeing our outfits daily to keeping them hidden in the closet. There’s a weird little corner that I still need to figure out where hubbs’ suit is kind of hidden behind a chandelier I salvaged from the old workplace, but they still go well together.

My favorite part is the mural I put over the door to the patio. It was such a weird, ugly space before. I found my inspiration from a couple photos I found on Pinterest. There was a photo of a duvet that I adore, but I quickly came to the conclusion that I could never have a white duvet because we have two pups. Then I saw a photo of text painted over a door and it just all came together for me. Since we’re in a rental, I did this with contact paper so we can remove it later. Now all that wall needs is a decision about window coverings to be made; I can never seem to make commitments like that! Suggestions welcome.
